LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - A mere 43 years after he first appeared on the U.S. album chart, former Kinks frontman Ray Davis is now debuting on the Billboard 200 as a solo artist.
His second solo album "Working Mans Cafe," debuted at No. 140 on the Billboard 200. The New West Records/Ammal Records release marks his follow-up to 2006s "Other Peoples Lives."
While the Kinks have six top 20 albums to their credit, only one LP reached the top 10. "The Kinks Greatest Hits!" went to No. 9 in 1966. The last Kinks album to chart was 1993s "Phobia," which peaked at No. 166. "Working Mans Cafe" is the highest-ranking album featuring Davies since "UK Drive" rode to No. 122 in 1989.
Davies is not the first member of the Kinks to chart as a solo artist on the Billboard 200. His brother, Dave Davies, peaked at No. 42 in 1980 with "AFL1-3603" and at No. 152 in 1981 with "Glamour."
Ray Davies will kick off a brief North American theater tour to promote "Working Mans Cafe" on March 28 in San Francisco.
