NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Fledgling movie distributor Overture Films has picked up U.S. rights to the seriocomic drama "Sunshine Cleaning," starring Amy Adams, Emily Blunt, Steve Zahn and Alan Arkin.
The 7 million project premiered at Sundance in January, following pre-festival buzz that its strong cast and presumed comedic tone might trigger a bidding war.
But director Christine Jeffs film had a more serious tone than many had expected, and mixed critical response led to caution among buyers. Adams and Blunt play desperate sisters who start a crime-scene cleanup business.
Overture paid about 2 million for U.S. rights, and will share a substantial part of any profits with the films producer, Big Beach. Additionally, Maximum Films paid a mid-six-figure sum for Canadian rights.
Overture, a newly formed division of pay-TV firm Starz LLC, recently released its first movie, the inauspicious comedy "Mad Money" starring Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah and Katie Holmes.
