Smack in the middle of the Summer TCA Press Tour are always the Primetime Emmy Award nominations. On that note, HBO leads the pack once again with a hefty 85 nominations. Next is ABC at 76, followed by CBS (51), NBC (50), PBS (33), Fox (28), Showtime (21), Sci Fi Channel (15), Bravo and FX Networks (11 each) and TNT (10). HBO miniseries John Adams is the most nominated individual program, with 23. Next is NBCs 30 Rock with 17 (including 4 of the 5 nominations for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series), followed by AMCs Mad Men (16), ABCs Pushing Daisies (12), HBO made-for movie Recount (11), and HBO made-for movie Bernard and Doris (10).
Tying with 9 nominations each is The 80th Annual Academy Awards on ABC and Sci Fi Channel miniseries Tin Man, while Masterpiece Theatres Cranford (PBS), ABCs Dancing with the Stars and NBCs The Office netted 8 each. There was one actor from Lost (Michael Emerson as Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series) on the ballot, but the show itself picked up 7 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series.
Double-digit attention for AMCs Mad Men and ABCs Pushing Daisies (and acting nods including Christina Applegate and Jean Smart on ABCs Samantha Who?; Bryan Cranston for AMCs Breaking Bad; Glenn Close, Ted Danson and Zeljko Ivanek for FXs Damages; and Holly Hunter for TNTs Saving Grace) means there was no absence of freshman programming on the ballot. But there were (as always) a number of key omissions. First, and foremost, was NBCs Friday Night Nights, which received only one minor nomination for Outstanding Casting in a Drama Series. Ditto for the Peacock nets Scrubs, which was nominated solely for Outstanding Cinematography for a Half-Hour Series. Many critics referred to the most recent edition of CBS veteran Survivor as its best in years, but there was no nod for Outstanding Reality/Competition. Losts Matthew Fox and Evangeline Lilly have yet to receive an acting nomination. Showtimes The Tudors only had two nods: Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series and Outstanding Costumes for a Series. FXs Nip/Tuck and Rescue Me failed to snag a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series. And the final season of HBOs The Wire only made the cut in the drama writing category.
