Eva Longoria didn't look too happy to be photographed out smoking in Puerto Rico over the weekend. Longoria was attending the wedding of her friend, actress Rosalyn Sanchez, on the Caribbean island.
In Touch points out this week that Eva has lost what little weight she gained for her Desperate Housewives character over the summer. Her trainer says she's on a high protein diet with only fish and no meat. Maybe smoking helps her cut cravings too. It can help you lose weight, but it comes at a huge cost to your health.
The NY Daily News has an article about smoking celebrities who try and hide it from the public. Katherine Heigl, Britney Spears, and Lindsay Lohan are regularly photographed taking drags, but there are other celebrities who are smokers that we don't know about. Lauren Conrad is one, and Ashlee Simpson used to smoke before she got pregnant. Famous people are aware that there's a well deserved stigma associated with smoking and many don't want to set a bad example for fans and young people.
Smoking is a lot more acceptable in Europe and I have a slightly less negative opinion of the bad habit after living here a few years. It's definitely something that's socially influenced, and through legislation the US has helped curb smoking while changing attitudes and saving many people years of their lives. Celebrities know that they're only looking foolish by lighting up. Eva Longoria generally accomplishes that just by opening her mouth.

I agree, being a European I don't see why it's such a big deal in America. It's not like people in Europe know less about the health risks their taking, but I think they can accept it that it's a personal choice.

I don't smoke anymore, and feel much better having quit. That said, it's her body and she can do what she likes with it. Walking outdoors past someone smoking for a split second isn't going to harm me any more than sitting in exhaust-ridden traffic.
My attitude on smoking: "Welcome to the Nanny State, America".
Oh yea, as a commentor on the linked site points out, Pres-elect Obama is a smoker. Again, it's his body, his choice.

In europe the feeling towards smoking/smokers is changinging in the last few years/decade. And it is for the better! Even tho I am a smoker You are not aloud to smoke anymore in many places such as pubs and night clubs not even inside CIGAR SHOPS! (in the Netherlands, where even WEED is aloud!). So saying Europeans do not bother is a little outdated I´d say.

Sweet God. Outing the smokers? Nanny state or what? Whose business is this except Longoria's?
As an occasional smoker, I was really happy when the ban in public places came in as it made it much easier to not smoke. I still have an occasional one and I will forever defend a person's right to do what they want with their own body and money.

So what???, it's her choice, as a spaniard I understand that our state wants people to kick the habit because smokers cost a lot of money to our National Health system, which is FREE to everybody who lives and works here, but in the States where everybody has to pay for their medical bills I just don't get it

I live in the U.S. and I appreciate all the anti-smoking legislation. I hate going to other states where smoking in bars is still legal it smells gross and my clothes, hair, purse, everything just wreaks when I leave. Besides, 2nd hand smoke is worse for you because the smoker is getting it through a filter whereas everyone else is getting the smoke straight off the end of the cigarette. So really, a smoker is making everyone around them sick and smelly all for what? Their "personal choice"? I respect other countries and cultures, but am very happy to live in a state where there's no smoking in restaurants or bars
And Rachel, while we do have to pay our own healthcare, the premiums we pay are based on total losses of everyone, so if a large demographic is smoking and inferring the health costs associated with smoking, then that added loss to the healthcare company will trickle down to those who don't smoke. Well, I DO think that smoking is a disgusting and invasive habit, overall. Nothing's grosser than walking past a smoker and accidentally inhaling his polluted air. I live in VA (yay, tobacco country) and I won't even go out to eat at restaurants with smoking sections if I can help it. I just hate the way it smells so much, and it totally messes with the taste of my food.
I think that people have the right to smoke in their own homes, sure, but what if it leads to a kid getting asthma?
I've lost a few loved ones to lung cancer. It's hard to defend the rights of smokers after you've seen someone perish in such a horrid way.

It's hard to believe that she is a full on smoker when her husband is an athlete! My guess is that he is not a smoker, but you never know. Perhaps she is one of those people who smokes only when she's drinking which people are known to do at weddings. At any rate, it is nobody's business but hers.

I've been trying to quit smoking for about 40 years now. I quit every time I finish a pack, and I stay quit until I open the next one, which ranges from minutes to a couple years.
At any rate, it's her business. We all have to die of something. Some of us choose lung disease.
I don't like smoking in restaurants either and happily it's not allowed in this state. When traveling it seems funny to me to see smoking sections, because we don't have them. Even some bars, the ones that serve food, do not allow smoking.
But I don't think it's up to everyone to police this. I was waiting for the bus the other day, end of a hard work day, didn't take a break so it was my first cigarette since noon, I'm standing peacefully to myself sucking in a little tar and carcinogens, and this woman wearing an apricot suit with a full skirt, matching picture hat and stilleto heels came dancing up to me and started extolling the virtues of wellbutrin. Of course I've tried wellbutrin, which didn't help all that much with smoking cessation but gave me insomnia, constipation and seething rage, there are still some businesses I am too embarrassed to ever return to because I visited while on wellbutrin and caused a scene. I just said to the dancing apricot lady "I've tried it." Then she started with her lectures on the evils of the nasty habit and how she didn't even like being close to me while I did it (so go!) and finally I just said "You know, some of us just don't want to quit it" and exhaled in her face. For some reason her behavior is not considered rude in this society, but mine would be.

That is not true, Ellie. We are just as strong willed as the next person. Many of us - most of us - choose to smoke because we fukcing enjoy it, and it's reprehensible for you to label us as weak willed when we are your average people who happen to indulge in something not good for us. Lots of people do it with booze, drugs, too much food, we do it with nicotine. Anyone who really wants to can quit. So lay off. I'm fairly sure you have some bad habits of your own, not the least of which is being critical of others.

Ellie, you obviously don't know that nicotine is THE most addictive drug in the world, with heroin a long way behind. A broad statement like 'smokers are weak willed people' shows your ignorance. Smokers keep lighting up because once they are addicted, they have to to feel normal. When they say they 'enjoy it' it's the relief from unbearable tension that they 'enjoy'

Syko I see your points and I agree that the apricot lady (still giggling over that) was totally out of line. She's not the boss of you! I do feel strongly though that smoking is a cost to society and should be banned in public (indoors, that is, outdoors is whatever). If you are OK paying the extra $ for the butts and the healthcare, and you're not taking others down with you (esp. children) then it's your choice. Not sure if you have kids or a family though - you might just want to keep in mind that THEY might care if you get lung disease or something else/worse. Yes, I'm a kid of a heart attack victim and luckily my dad didn't die but I'm scared for all eternity that he will now! Also just had a co-worker who smoked experience a brain aneuryism and that was awful for him and his kids. eeek!

I smoke now and then, but haven't become addicted. I wonder why some ppl do? It's stinky and tastes nasty. I like the "rush" of that 1st cig but consecutive ones do nothing 4 me, so I just put em away.

Smoking sucks any way you look at it. I smoke socially sometimes due to the fact that I used to be a pack a day smoker. That's all out the window once I get sick like I am now. Maybe I'll stay quit for longer, I really HATE smoking. It's just no fun at all. Truth.
Eva is stupid no matter what though, smoking is the icing on the cake!

Well done, xia, and thanks to you and Syko for nipping the weak-willed smoker myth in the bud. Used to work for a rehab charity and even after the smoking ban came in and was rolled out across the entire building, we had to provide a smoking area for the clients because, while they could, and successfully did, ditch their (in many cases, multiple) drug(s) of choice, they couldn't function without their cigs.

Obama is an in the closet smoker. He just bums cigs of people and doesn't buy his own packs. It's a known fact. I'm pretty sure he's quit by now, maybe he'll have a cig or two during the presidency, because I would too, that's a helluva lot of stress to deal with!

All of my frieds smoke and I did for a couple years in college. People have been smoking tobacco for a ridiculously long amount of time in our history and to think that any one person or law is going to stop people from doing it is just plain naive, as is thinking that a filter actually makes a cigarette better for you

But there are too many smokers who selfishly say, "It's my body and my choice," and then proceed to blow smoke in my daughter's face as we're walking into the hospital. Sorry, but at that point, I just get angry and incredibly unsympathetic.

I don't smoke and neither do my parents. I'm currently in Spain so of course just about everybody smokes. There isn't any anti-smoking legislation really in place yet. My host mother here smokes-it doesn't bother me because she is considerate about it, she doesn't light up in my face. However when I'm sitting at an outdoor cafe/in a restaurant and a smoker decides to plop him/herself behind me and blow their smoke towards my back, I have an issue with it. I usually end up switching tables to get away from it because I cannot stand the smell. I feel bad for doing so because I don't want to make the smoker feel bad (I've gotten the evil eye before) but at the same time I shouldn't have to breathe it in if I don't want to.

Good on you Syko. I go through phases with the smoking depending on my anxiety level. But when I'm in my smoking phase I can't quit, and then one day I wake up and can't abide the taste or the smellthe green tobacco on the other hand, I can't seem to give up.
Watching one of my best friends try to quit smoking has been hard for me only because it is so hard for her. I've heroine addicts say that kicking nicotine was harder than kicking dope.

I'm a smoker, have been for almost 10 years. While I agree that it's a smelly and disgusting habit, to me it's no worse than drinking. Drinking can get pretty smelly and disgusting real quick too.
I gotta admit, though, I'm more concerned about the premature wrinkles than possibly getting cancer. I'm planning on quitting for good when I get pregnant (obviously), preferrably before I get pregnant. I don't think there's anything in the world that could get me to quit any time before that. No "truth" commercial, annoying preachy person that needs to mind his/her own business, even my mother fanning the smoke away dramatically when it's not even near her could make me quit right now.
Anyway, I could really give a rats ass what celebrities are smoking. I see no real need to be in the closet over it, but it's their life, so who cares.
